How to Convert Grams to Cups: A Practical Guide

If a recipe gives you a weight in grams but your measuring tools are all in cups, the fix is a single division, as long as you know the right number to divide by. Here’s the full process, step by step.

Step 1: Identify the ingredient

Every ingredient has its own density, so the first thing to do is figure out exactly what you’re measuring. “Sugar” isn’t specific enough: granulated sugar, brown sugar, and powdered sugar all pack differently into a cup, with values ranging from 120g to 220g per cup.

Step 2: Find its grams-per-cup value

Step 3: Divide

The formula is simple:

cups = grams ÷ (grams per cup for that ingredient)

So 180g of all-purpose flour (120g per cup) becomes 180 ÷ 120 = 1.5 cups. 180g of granulated sugar (200g per cup) becomes 180 ÷ 200 = 0.9 cups, a meaningfully different result from the same starting weight.

Step 4: Round to a measurable amount

Since measuring cups usually only come in halves, thirds, and quarters, round your result to the nearest practical fraction; an eighth of a cup is usually as precise as a kitchen setup allows. Common mistakes to avoid
